School construction and development of rural areas in Afghanistan
War, civil war, corruption and extreme poverty: Afghanistan is a country with a multitude of problems and challenges.
25 years in Afghanistan
For more than 25 years, Danish People’s Aid has been working with and for the Afghan people through the organisations DACAAR and our own school construction programme DAARTT.
We provide quality schools and services within water and sanitation, agricultural development, technical training, job creation and education.
Women in focus
Through its activities, Danish People’s Aid brings the lives and possibilities of the Afghan women into focus. DACAAR runs a women’s centre programme. DAARTT enables admission of girls and boys to schools on equal terms.
Afghanistan is one of the most gender segregated countries in the world: with a few exceptions, women experience that the rights provided by the new Afghan constitution are nothing but words on a piece of paper – not a fact. Therefore, these women and their conditions are the only real indicator of whether Afghanistan is heading in the right direction.

Local work
In its work Danish People’s Aid wishes to live up to the humanitarian principles of independence, impartiality and focus on the most vulnerable groups of the population.
Our cooperation with the local people is at the centre of our activities. Moreover, the local communities guarantee our safety.
Danish People’s Aid does not operate under the protection of military or private Afghan security forces.
A weak government is a problem
Fighting poverty is inseparably tied to the development of the Afghan state, which holds its own unique challenges.
The actual power in Afghanistan has always belonged in the provinces. The present central government in Kabul lacks legitimacy with the poorest part of the population which makes up the majority of the country. The central government will not succeed until it provides the basic service for its people along with the necessary protection.
We face many challenges in Afghanistan.
| Facts DAARTT is the Danish People’s Aid programme for school construction in Afghanistan. DACAAR is a co-operation between Danish People’s Aid and The Danish Refugee Council. We operate in close contact with a number of other organisations to enhance the effect of our activities. In Afghanistan we are part of ACBAR (Agency Coordinating Body for Afghan Relief), which secures that the various organisations reach the much tried Afghans as efficiently as possible. |
