DACAAR

Bringing Help to the Rural Areas of Afghanistan

Danish People’s Aid is part of the well-reputed DACAAR cooperation in Afghanistan.

Our Aim
As a part of DACAAR, our goal is to improve the living conditions of the Afghan rural population through sustainable activities, which makes the local communities take charge of their own life and their future.

We do this through two large programmes: Improvement of the water supply, sanitation and hygiene, and development of income-generating activities in the rural areas.

We also contribute to the improvement of roads and other infrastructure in Afghanistan through cooperation with ministries and government bodies.

Great achievements with long-term effects
In DACAAR we focus on results and the visible effects of our activities.

More than 7 million Afghans in 27 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces now have access to clean drinking water from approx. 40,000 wells drilled by DACAAR.

DACAAR is one of the principal actors in the field of water and sanitation in Afghanistan and participates in the development of new technologies and tools to improve water quality.

Within DACAAR we strive to secure long-term effects of our rural activities. We do this i.a. through applying a holistic approach to development. Support to other minor organisations and their members are also an important part.

DACAAR works closely with the local communities. Through an innovative and participatory approach, we detect the needs and wishes of the local population. These needs and wishes are transformed into the activities that we carry through.

Facts about DACAAR
DACAAR is an acronym for Danish Aid to Afghan Refugees.

DACAAR was founded back in 1984 with a dual purpose:

  1. Helping Afghan refugees in the neighbouring countries of Afghanistan, until they are capable of returning to Afghanistan to start a new life
  2. Furthering the rebuilding and development of Afghanistan to enable Afghan refugees and internally displaced persons to return to their country and participate in the reconstruction of their local community

DACAAR’s work is based on universal human rights and a respect for Afghan cultures. We support all ethnic groups and both genders, which is reflected in DACAAR’s recruitment policy.

DACAAR is a large organisation. Today, DACAAR has approx. 700 employees and an annual turnover of about DKK 40 million.
