Help the orphans of South Africa
In cooperation with the South African Samaritan Organisation – SASO – Danish People’s Aid supports orphaned children in two of South Africa’s black townships.
Our work
SASO runs two leisure centres in Lehlohonolo in Tumahole and Thusong in Vredefort townships.

Each day, more than 250 orphaned children and teenagers have two nutritious meals in the two youth centres. They also get help for their homework financial support for medication, school uniforms and other equipment. When the financial circumstances permit, excursions and cultural arrangements are offered.
Educational activities are offered to the youngest children who do not yet attend school.
Many collective members of Danish People’s Aid offer budget support to SASO. Money from the trade unions “Blik & Rør”, “Dansk Metal” and “Malerforbundet i Danmark” contribute to the orphans’ school attendance, medicine and fixed expenses.
A number of local branches of Danish People’s Aid have chosen to help SASO to buy furniture, kitchen utensils, educational material and toys.

Our Cooperation with SASO
The cooperation with SASO began in 2007, when Danish People’s Aid organised a study tour to South Africa for its members giving them a chance to visit the children’s homes, which had been established in cooperation with Thabang Society and financed through the Danish national collection.
In October 2009, Danish People’s Aid offered another study tour. This was the starting point for the Board of Danish People’s Aid to launch a campaign which was to engage and commit the local branches and individual members in the support effort for the orphaned children and teenagers of South Africa.

In 2010, Danish People’s Aid appointed SASO “People Helpers” of the year, just when they had had a building plot handed over to them from the Municipality of Parys/Tumahole, wit directions to start building activities immediately. In 2010 Danish People’s Aid therefore donated a sum of money for the construction of a pavilion at the site. Another activity is the laying out of a vegetable garden to secure a diverse supply of fresh vegetables.
| Facts about SASO SASO is a South African NGO, established in 1997 to protect the rights of orphaned children and promote their well-being. SASO’s objectives and activities are comparable with the commitment of Danish People’s Aid, namely to support socially disadvantaged children in Denmark and Greenland, making the partnership between the two organisations obvious. |
