Africa

About half of the world's population lacks proper sanitation and more than 600 million people rely on nature as a toilet. In Africa, we work for clean water, hygienic conditions and a local population that takes ownership and responsibility.

Danish People's Aid works to ensure that people in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia and Somalia gain an increased understanding of their basic rights - and duties.

We support partners in their policy formulation and planning processes to ensure that people's own needs and priorities in the areas of water, sanitation and hygiene are included. Our work contributes to both more and better water, sanitation and hygiene services.

Locals must actively participate in the planning process and hold their elected representatives and local administration accountable for the water and sanitation services they are legally entitled to.

This involvement ensures ownership of the initiatives and a more systematic approach to getting clean water, hygiene and sanitation on the political agenda.

“Access to clean water is not only a prerequisite for better health, food and well-being. It is also a prerequisite for achieving the other 16 SDGs.”
