STRONG CIVIL SOCIETY REQUIRES CLEAN WATER AND PROPER TOILET CONDITIONS

One in three children in Uganda lacks access to clean water. In some schools in Tanzania, more than 100 children share a toilet. And in Zambia, money earmarked for water and sanitation in public budgets is used for other things or not at all.

Danish People's Aid is working to ensure access to water and sanitation in some of the countries in Africa where the shortage is greatest. Especially in desolate rural areas and in the slums of large cities, sanitary conditions are poor, and citizens have to walk long distances to collect water from communal wells or pumps. In 2023, we ensured, in collaboration with local partners, improved sanitation conditions for 12,400 African students.

To support civil society organizations and their cooperation, Danish People's Aid facilitates a broad network across five African countries: Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia and Somalia. In all countries, the organizations advocate for needs and rights in the area of water, sanitation and hygiene and hold their elected officials accountable.

ADVOCACY IN UGANDA

Winnie is a role model
in Kampala

Winnie Mirembe, 24 years old, leading figure in a youth group in Kampala, Uganda, which Danish People's Aid and partner CIDI have established, supported and
taught advocacy: “We founded the group in 2021 to learn how to speak up for ourselves and create a better environment – both physical and human – in our neighborhood. Now we are role models for children throughout the district.”
